PUBLIC HEARING FOR THE EASTERN MARKET ACCESS PROJECT
Tue, Jul 11, 2017 - 7pm at 200 Baltimore Street, La Plata, MD 20646
Eastern Market Access (EMA)
-This project will help meet increasing demand for natural gas for two local customers: Washington Gas, a local gas utility that serves more than one million residential, commercial and industrial customers in Maryland, metro D.C., and Virginia and; Mattawoman Energy Center, an electric power-generation facility being built in Maryland.
-Using Dominion’s existing pipeline system, EMA would provide enough natural gas to heat roughly 267,000 households for an average winter day.
-Once operational, the EMA project will supply gas to the Mattawoman Energy Center, which will have the ability to generate reliable electricity for more than 900,000 homes in the region.
-Washington Gas depends on gas supply from the Dominion Cove Point pipeline in order to provide reliable service to Southern Maryland customers
Meeting Local Energy Demand and Economic Development
-The Eastern Market Access project is a natural gas infrastructure upgrade project proposed by Dominion that will better serve growing energy demand in Southern Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
-The Southern Maryland and Metro DC region is one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States. With this growth comes great demand for energy used every day to heat homes and power businesses.
-Over 210,000 homes and businesses in Southern Maryland rely on natural gas for home heating and in-home energy needs.
-Approximately 44% of all Maryland households rely on natural gas for home heating and in-home energy needs.
-The Eastern Market Access project will help the region meet demand for clean, affordable and reliable energy while providing local tax benefits during construction and once in operation.
-Affordable electricity and access to natural gas are critical elements for economic development. This project will help ensure both.
-The Eastern Market Access project will create construction jobs locally in Charles County, while generating an extra $1 million a year for the County via property tax revenue.
-America is the world’s largest producer of natural gas. Greater access to an additional supply of American natural gas, delivered through this project, would help Maryland ratepayers
-By increasing in-state electric generation capacity, Maryland can limit energy imports and save ratepayer money while simultaneously creating jobs and boosting tax revenue.
-Two important regional employers, PAX River and Indian Head Naval Base, rely on natural gas either for building heating or onsite power generation
Jobs and Quality of Work
-Construction may be temporary, but millions of people around this country make a good living from temporary jobs so they can provide for their families.
-Our members have experience working on all kinds of gas infrastructure projects. We know from firsthand experience how safely they are designed and built.
-The men and women working on infrastructure projects like this require high quality training, strict standards and various certificates.
-Our members live in the communities where these infrastructure projects are built. We know how important it is for them to be built and operated to standard, and we know that they will be.
Smart Infrastructure Growth
-The entire EMA project will be constructed on existing Dominion property and along Dominion’s existing interstate natural gas pipeline. No additional rights-of-way will be required.
-By utilizing existing operational sites, this project will help meet local energy needs while limiting infrastructure sprawl.
-The proposed Charles Station site is already utilized by Dominion for operational needs. This project will take advantage of the existing infrastructure corridor to continue meeting growing energy needs.
-When compared with sources from abroad, American energy sources cost far less to bring to market, resulting in decreased energy costs – savings that are passed directly to consumers.
Environmental
-The Eastern Access Market project will help our area support a cleaner energy future that significantly reduces carbon emissions while supporting American energy and putting Marylanders to work.
-While alternative generation sources will continue to increasingly help meet energy demand moving forward, using natural gas in concert with renewables helps ensure a reliable energy grid.
-Abundant and affordable natural gas is a reliable bridge fuel that allows us to meet energy demand today while advancing the renewable energy technologies of tomorrow.
-Natural gas is a cleaner source of energy that is being relied upon to reduce carbon emissions as existing coal generation facilities across Maryland are phased into retirement.
Community Partnerships
- Dominion Energy has a long history of working with the local community to support causes that make a difference
- Corporate Citizens like Dominion can contribute time and resources to important local initiatives that help strengthen the fabric of our community
